What’s Holding You Back?


If you are not where you want to be in life right now and seem to be just treading water, it may be time to ask yourself the question, “What’s holding you back?”

There can be many reasons for not advancing toward your goals or living the life of abundance we all want to live. Here are 10 things that may be holding you back from the life you should be living.

1. Comparing yourself to others – This is a killer! It kills dreams. It kills motivation. It kills your ability to see yourself for the wonderful and unique person you are. Always remember that no one can be YOU as good as you can. You don’t know their story. You don’t know their struggles. You don’t know how long it took them to get to their success. Everyone’s story is different and there are literally a million different ways to get to the same destination. Your road will be unique to you. It’s YOUR story, embrace it.

2. Stop asking the wrong questions – Stop asking “If” and start asking “How?” If this happens, then this and this and this will happen is part of the worry habit. Don’t go there. How about asking, “How can I get there from here? What do I need to put in place for this to happen for me? What hours do I need to work? What skills do I need?”

3. Stop waiting for other’s to give you permission – Everyone is always looking for approval from others, especially from those we are closest to: Family and friends. Stop looking for other people’s approval and live the life you want. Follow your heart and listen to your soul. You will never be happy living your life for other people’s approval.

4. Procrastination – Everyone always wants to wait for the “right” time. Here’s a clue. There is no “right” time. It doesn’t exist. The time is now and the ball is in your court. If you’re going to do something, jump in with both feet and learn how to swim as you go.

5. Stop expecting instant results – Things worth having are worth working and waiting for. Unless you are a lottery winner, there is no such thing as an overnight success. There is such a thing as years of grunt work that go unnoticed by others until one day, all of that grunt work pays off and you start seeing results of your labors. Keep working. Keep your eyes on the prize and don’t quit. You are not going to decide to be a world class surgeon and wake up tomorrow with a medical degree from Harvard and a scalpel in our hand. All success takes time, whether you are an artist, a blogger, a network marketer or a doctor.

6. You don’t take action – This one trips many of us up. We spend so much time dreaming, setting goals and getting ready to start that we never actually get up off our backsides and take the action steps necessary to succeed. Take action. Do what it necessary to make those dreams and goals a reality. You can do it, but not if you sit on your rump all day wishing instead of doing.

7. You create fake “busyness” – You say you are spending 2 hours “working,” but were you really working or were your straightening up your office, making cute organizers and getting everything “just right” for work? Where are your actions leading you? If they are not leading you toward results, then you’re just wasting time on busy work.

8. You assume talent and not persistence is the key to success – Here’s a secret: There are a lot of talented people in this world. There are women in the world who are better dancers and singers than Madonna or Beyonce, there are better rappers than Jay-Z and Kanye, there are better actors than Jennifer Lawrence and there are more beautiful women than Kim Kardashian. However, they are working as waitresses, car salesmen, grocery store clerks or dead end office jobs. You know why? They gave up on their dreams. I remember reading a story once about Sean (P. Diddy) Combs and how, when he was first trying to break into the music business, took an intern job for a record label and worked for nothing, sleeping in the studio, sweeping up and doing anything he needed to so he could learn the business from those who were doing what he wanted to do one day. That is persistence. That is why he is successful today. He was willing to go the extra mile, do what needed to be done and not quit until he got the success he enjoys today.

9. You’re not flexible – You look at your plan and don’t waiver from it. There is persistence and then there is stupidity. Stop banging your head against a brick wall! If you’ve got a goal and a way to get there, but that way is not working, then try another one. You don’t have to change the goal, just the way you are approaching the goal. As stated before, there a million different routes to get to the same destination. Stop taking the same dead end road and look for a better one.

10. You do it alone – No man is an island. Ask for help. Seek advice from those who have done what you want to do and follow it. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but of strength. Reach out and ask!

I hope these 10 tips will help you move past whatever it is that may be holding you back. You deserve to live a wonderful life of abundance.
