What’s In Your Food?

I have been on a healthier eating journey for a few years now. I’m not perfect. Far from it! However, I am making a concerted effort to eat healthier foods and make healthier choices for both myself and my family.

One question I keep asking myself more and more is, “What’s in this?” I find myself searching labels and seeing more chemicals and less real food.

Take Ginger Ale for instance. The other day one of my children had an upset stomach. My Ginger from Young Living had not arrived yet and they didn’t want the Peppermint, so I thought I’d run to the store and grab some ginger ale to help settle their stomach.

Guess what I found?

No Ginger in the GINGER ale! There’s other stuff, like High Fructose Corn Syrup, “Natural” Flavors (which, quite frankly could be ANYTHING), Caramel Color, etc. Just no Ginger.

That’s when I decided to make my own ginger ale. I’ll be blogging about that on Friday.

Anyway, that’s just one example of how fake our food has become. Ginger ale used to have ginger in it. Not anymore. If you want real food, you’re going to have to make your own, because even “natural” doesn’t mean what you think it means!

If you want a real eye opener, take a look at this video. Your eyes will be opened. Hopefully, the more we are all aware of what is in our food and how it negatively effects our bodies, the better we will do.

As Maya Angelou famously said, “When you know better, you do better.”

When you know what you should be eating and you know what’s really in your food, you can make better choices. You can stand up and tell those supplying our food what we will and will not accept.

When you are seeking to live a more abundant life, a large part of that life is keeping yourself healthy. You cannot do that by pouring chemicals and junk into your body on a daily basis. There will be consequences.

Eat real, organic food. I know many will say, “But it’s more expensive.” That’s true and the video above explains why. However, can you put a price on your health? Would you rather buy $6 eggs and know they are hormone/steroid/chemical-free or buy $3 eggs and load all kinds of antibiotics, steroids and chemicals into your system, not knowing what the long-term consequences are?

I know my answer. (If you’d like some tips on eating real food on a budget, read this blog post by Mommypotamus).

We need to be advocates for ourselves and our families. God has given us wonderful seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables to nourish out bodies. We don’t need them injected with pesticides and other chemicals. They were perfect just the way they were.

Europeans aren’t eating this mess. Why are we?

Educate yourself. Read labels. Demand real food.

May you have a blessed, healthy and happy day living in abundance!
