Triathlon anyone?

I know, I can’t believe that I’m actually considering doing this.

When you say the word, Triathlon, many people associate it with the Ironman Triathlon and that thing is brutal. Wikipedia describes it like this:

An Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bike and a marathon 26.2-mile (42.2 km) run, raced in that order and without a break. Most Ironman events have a strict time limit of 17 hours to complete the race, where the Ironman race starts at 7:00 AM, the mandatory swim cut off for the 2.4-mile (3.9 km) swim is 2 hours 20 minutes, the bike cut off time is 5:30 PM, and all finishers must complete their marathon by midnight.

Like I said … BRUTAL!!!

What many people don’t realize and I did not realize myself, is that there are varying triathlons offered, including something called a sprint triathlon. For the sprint triathlon, you swim for 750 meters (0.47 mi), bike for 20 kilometers (12 mi), and run 5 kilometers (3.1 mi).

For some crazy reason, I think I can do this!

I’m now up to running 25 minutes 6 days a week (Couch to 5K update). I’m basically running the 3 miles every morning. Here’s a shot of the trail I run on:

As for the swimming, since it’s summer, I’ve been taking my kids to the pool every afternoon and swimming laps. I’m really enjoying the swimming and my technique is improving. My bike is still in storage back in TN, but hubby’s supposed to go there in a few weeks to pick up the rest of our stuff, so I could start training with that as well. My bike is not one of those racing bikes, it looks like this and has automatic gear shifts (it’s like driving an automatic vs. a manual). I love my bike and I don’t think a 12 mile ride is that big of a deal.

I did my second weigh-in for Weight Watchers and I’ve lost another 2 pounds, so that’s a 4 pound weight loss total! Yeah!

I’ll keep the blog updated as I figure out if I’m in shape enough to go for the Sprint Triathlon. I hope so, because it seems like it would be a lot of fun!
