Top 7 Must Have Kitchen Appliances

Note: I found this kitchen on Pinterest and it didn’t have a link back, but I adore it and wish it was my kitchen!

I confess, I hate to cook! Maybe that’s not a strong enough word, let me amend that. I LOATHE cooking! There, that’s better.

However, since I’m not a raw foodie (yet!), and I have a husband and three children who like to have their food cooked, it is something I must do every day. Don’t get me wrong, I can cook. I’m from the south and my grandmother was the best cook in the world and because she lived with us, she taught me everything she knew.

Don’t believe me? Let me tell you this little story. When I started dating my college sweetheart, he was bragging on his “Aunt Rita” and how she was the best cook in the world. I said, “Sorry (not sorry), but Ganga (my grandmother) is the best cook in the world. She and her sister even had a man offer to buy them a restaurant once because their cooking was so good.” And so this argument went on for a few weeks until I invited him to my house for dinner one weekend.

Ganga did her thing and cooked up the most delicious meal in the world. My boyfriend at the time ate. And ate. And ate. In fact, he ate so much of Ganga’s cooking that he couldn’t get up from the table and just laid down on the chairs. He managed to raise his head slightly and say, “You were right.”

So, yes, I can cook. I just don’t enjoy it. Maybe if I didn’t HAVE to cook I would enjoy it more, but I HAVE to cook to feed my family of 5. It reminds me of this meme I saw on Facebook.

You know what makes that time in the kitchen easier? Gadgets and appliances! The right appliance or gadget can make that time spent in the kitchen easier to take and fast!

So what are must have appliances? Here are 7:

1. Slow Cooker – Or, as most of us refer to it, the crock pot! This thing gets used in my house at least once a week. Because I am fortunate enough to be a stay-at-home mom, I don’t have to start it while I’m rushing out the door to work in the morning. I usually start my crock cooking in the middle of the day and it’s ready by dinner time. Here is a really great one! They make terrific wedding gifts!

2. Blender – I admit it. I still use the blender I’ve had forever, mostly because I don’t believe in throwing things away and also, because it still works perfectly fine. It’s not fancy and high tech, but it gets the job done. When it finally does kick the bucket though, I am yearning for a Vitamix. In fact, I think I’ll put that on my Christmas list for later this year. Yes, the Vitamix is expensive, but I look at it like an investment in a really great appliance that will last forever. I have read all of the comparisons between Vitamix and Blentec and decided on Vitamix. Here is the one I intend to get for myself, mostly because I eat a raw vegan meal until six, and this thing would make awesome smoothies.

3. Coffee Maker – I have one cup of coffee a day. In the morning with some maple syrup and almond milk. It’s an indulgence. I make myself feel better by knowing the Ikarians drink Greek coffee every day and they’re some of the longest lived people on the planet. My daughter wants one of these Keurig single cup coffee makers so she can make a single cup whenever she’s ready. I admit I have not tried it as we have a basic coffee maker. However, when the time comes, this is the one she is pining for.

4. Food Processor – This handy dandy appliance makes quick work of slicing, chopping, blending, pureeing and kneading. It’s like a robot in your kitchen to do all the stuff you don’t want to do! I was gifted a smaller Cuisinart as a wedding present, but after almost 20 years, I asked for (and received) this 14 cup model.

5. Toaster Oven – Didn’t one of those housewives on one of those not-really housewives shows on Bravo cook all of her food in a toaster oven? I seem to remember flipping channels one day and seeing a scene with one of them talking about making all of her food in a toaster oven. I don’t use my toaster oven that often, but it is handy for making a lot of toast and my kids use it a lot! We have this model.

6. Stand Mixers – This is another thing on my wish list as I still have the hand mixer I got as a wedding present again, almost 20 years ago. I want a Kitchen Aid stand mixer, mostly because The Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten, always makes it look like so much fun to use it. This is the one I’m planning on getting and I want it in either red or turquoise!

7. All-In-One Pressure Cooker – This is the latest appliance I’ve added to my kitchen and let me tell you, it is a life-changer! I am making great meals, in one pot, FAST! It even has a slow-cooker mode, which means I really don’t need my crock pot anymore. This is the one I got and so far I’ve made pasta and No-Chicken Chicken and Dumplings as well as oatmeal. Love this thing and cannot recommend it enough!
