The Real Key To Happiness

What is the real key to happiness?

Most people are looking to things to make them happy. They think if they have more money, more cars, bigger houses and more stuff they will be happy.

I will tell you a story from when I was working in Beverly Hills, California years ago. I will not name the store, but it was in the heart of Beverly Hills by Rodeo Drive.

I was pursuing my dream of becoming an actress and needed a job to pay the bills. I was able to get this job in a family-owned business. A lot of wealth came and went in that store.

One of the owners was abrasive to pretty much everyone he met. He was rude and obnoxious to pretty much everyone, including the staff. However, he was always nice to me. Maybe it was because I always had a smile, or was positive all the time. To this day, I’m not sure why, but he always treated me well.

Over time, you learn things about people and one of the things I learned about this man was that he was married and had two children. He owned a million dollar yacht that never left the marina, but had a staff at all times which cost him $100,000 a year in salaries.

He lived in Bel Air with his family and seemingly had everything anyone could hope for. His wife was beautiful, friendly and very nice.

And he was having an affair.

He was seeing someone else that was working in the store. However, I found out that not only was he having an affair with this woman on a regular basis, but he was cheating on the mistress with several other women.

Don’t think his wife didn’t know. She did. In fact, he told me once that when he started working out and losing weight, his wife commented to him, “There are only two reasons a man loses weight. You’re either sick or having an affair and you don’t look sick to me.”

So, she knew.

One day, I was having a bad day. I missed my family back in Virginia, I was lonely and I was just feeling very down. I couldn’t help it as a tear rolled down my cheek.

This man noticed and called me into his office, asking me what was wrong. I told him I was just missing my family. As the tears started rolling down my cheeks more freely, he sat back in his chair and said, “You know what, Sherry? A person can have all the money in the world and still be one of the most miserable people in the world.”

I just looked at him as he continued.

“I am a very miserable person,” he said. He then handed me some money, told me to go have lunch on him and take the rest of the day off.

Since leaving that store, I have often wondered what happened to him and his family. I wondered if he found the happiness he was looking for, but not finding in yachts and mistresses.

Yesterday, I came across this old video made by fitness guru Jack Lalanne. He has some excellent advice for people like this man back in Beverly Hills.

In fact, it’s pretty good advice for all of us.

Have a great day!
