Are You Ready To Run?

Are you ready to run?

About 4 years ago, I started running. I absolutely fell in love with it. It was one of the hardest and most satisfying things I’ve ever done for myself.

I started on the Couch to 5k program and that first week, just running for 1 minute at a stretch was almost impossible for me. However, by the time I was finished with the program, I was running for 30 minutes straight. The feeling of accomplishment was unbelievably satisfying.

My sons started running with me. That brought an entirely new dimension of enjoyment to my runs. I think we had more meaningful conversations during those 30 minute runs than we had all day long.

Eventually, our 30 minute runs turned into 40 minute runs. One day my youngest son said, “Let’s go an hour!” I wasn’t sure I could run for an hour, but I told him I was willing to give it a try. His brother did not want to run on Saturdays, but the following Saturday, my youngest son and I ran for a solid hour and it was fabulous!

I continued to run, sometimes with my boys and sometimes by myself. Running became my therapist, my think tank, my writing partner and my mental salvation. I ran in the ice. I ran in the snow. Once I ran in a downpour that drenched me to my bones and I loved every second of it.

The summer of 2014 was an incredibly stressful time for our family. I will not go into details, but I was at the lowest point I have ever been in my life. I should have kept running. I needed to keep running, but I was so low, I could not summon the energy to get out of the door.

That fall we moved back to Tennessee and I thought about starting back to running. However, the beautiful nature preserve that was outside my door at our home in Virginia with a lake, a wooded trail by a trickling stream and wildlife everywhere, was replaced by a subdivision. The only park that was close was a 15 minute car drive and that park was mostly for children to play on the swings and slides.

It was not exactly a running utopia.

My motivation to run was gone. Then, one day last week, I started asking myself why wasn’t I running? Was it just the surroundings that had kept me going before or was it something more?

I decided to grab my rough collie Link and head out the door to find out. I checked out the Couch to 5k program to see what the time breaks were for the first week and off we went. To my surprise both of us had a great time.

My rough collie Link is now my new running partner.

My boys are off from middle school on Spring Break. This morning, they went out running with me and Link. I think they’re going to start running again too.

If you would like to start running, I cannot recommend this program enough. It took someone who loathed running and turned them into a runner who looked forward to heading out the door each morning.
