Why Quitting Should Never Be An Option

th-1

The other day, my daughter asked me if I could see if she could drop a class in school. I knew she was getting an A in that class and in fact, it was a class she liked. When I asked her why, she said, “It’s just so hard. I feel so much pressure.” Needless to say, I did not let her drop that class and here is what I told her.

When you quit something just because it’s hard, you set up a terrible precedent for yourself that when things get tough, you quit. You send a message to your brain that it’s okay not to follow through. That is not something I want my children to learn.

Years ago Barbara Walters interviewed iconic movie star Paul Newman and asked him how he and Joann Woodward managed to stay happily married for so many years. His answer, “Today we live in a throw-away society. If something is broken, you throw it away and get a new one. In our family, if the refrigerator is broken, we fix it. If the toaster is broken, we fix it. And if something is broken in our marriage, we fix that too.”

Yesterday, I read a great article on Michael Hyatt’s site written by a guest blogger. The article talked about how many people expect something for nothing. I like to call this the lottery mentality. They are always looking for a quick fix or for something miraculous to happen that will suddenly propel them from financial struggle to instantaneous wealth and prosperity.

Unfortunately for them, life does not work that way. If you want to reap the harvest, you must plow the fields, sow the seeds, weed the plants and then harvest the fruits of your labor. If you don’t work, you don’t eat and if you quit while doing the hard part of plowing and sowing, you don’t eat either.

No matter what you start, you must tell yourself that quitting is not an option. If you run into road blocks, look for ways over, under, around or through them. Don’t quit! Don’t give up! That is the entire reason many people fail at diets, network marketing, marriage and life.

They quit.

There is much truth in that tried and true quote, “Quitters never win and winners never quit.” That is because people who quit will never see the finish line. Winners on the other hand, will run, walk, hop, crawl and drag themselves until they cross it.

Don’t be a quitter. Be a winner!

I think it’s great you’re encouraging your daughter to take on tough tasks. She’ll appreciate it once she’s older and in the “real world.” If you quit once, it really is easier to quit again and again. Very encouraging!

Thank you! Sometimes it’s hard to keep going, but I think it’s important to stay the course.

  3. WE do not use the word quit in our house! I LOVE this ” If you want to reap the harvest, you must plow the fields, sow the seeds, weed the plants and then harvest the fruits of your labor. If you don’t work, you don’t eat and if you quit while doing the hard part of plowing and sowing, you don’t eat either.” well said!!
