Why You Should Never Settle For Less

Zootopia Character

About a week ago, two of my children wanted to see the movie, Zootopia. Even though my kids are all older, my 18 year old daughter aspires to be a storyboard artist/animator for a studio when she finishes school, so usually she’s happy to see an animated film when it comes out.

I’m not sure what I was expecting, but the message of the film was pretty clear…

Don’t settle for less than what you want and don’t let anyone tell you your dreams are too big.

I tell this to my children all the time, but it was reinforced by this movie which all three of us thoroughly enjoyed. My 14 year old son had no interest in seeing Zootopia, but he’s a huge Deadpool fan, so no surprise there.

Teen Reading Deadpool

My son Jackson would rather read a Deadpool comic than see an animated film.

In the film, the daughter bunny, Judy Hopps, has a dream of being a police officer in the big city. Everyone disparages her dream because she’s a bunny. Her father even tells her, and I’m paraphrasing here, “It’s nice to dream, but you need to be realistic. You should just settle like the rest of us and become a farmer like everyone in your family.”

How many times have we heard that from family, friends and even strangers?

The big life … the one we live in our imagination every time we buy one of those $250 million lottery jackpot tickets … is just a fantasy to most people. Why? Because we convince ourselves, we don’t deserve it, or we cannot achieve it.

Whether through our upbringing, our choice of friends, our current circumstances or something else, we have decided at some point that pursuing our dream life is unrealistic and therefore unattainable.

In short, we choose a comfortable life over a life fighting for the life of our dreams.

Look around you. Do you think the person who does your taxes grew up thinking, “I want to crunch numbers in an office for the rest of my life!” or that the receptionist at your doctor’s office thought at 15 years old, “I’m going to greet people for a living and struggle to pay my bills every month”?

My guess would be no. Most of us have buried those dreams, whether out of financial responsibility, lack of willpower, lack of discipline or something else. We make a choice to give up.

My hope for all of you is that you never settle for less than the dream life you envision for yourselves. My motto will always be to dream big, set goals and take action. Enjoy the journey, but don’t ever settle for less than what you want.

Have an awesome day!
