10 Reasons Why You Need To Get Outside

Get Outside

Walking in nature can improve your spirit and your health.

I LOVE being outside. It feeds my soul. I’m a barefoot person too, so there’s few things I like better than going barefoot on spring grass.

It’s delightful and refreshing and liberating all at the same time.

Kids and Dogs playing in the river

Playing with my kids and dogs in a shallow bend of a river.

This past weekend spring was in full force (though I understand that wasn’t the case in a lot of the country … sorry!). Yesterday, we took the kids and our dogs out to a local park to have some outside fun. This included playing in a trickling river and skipping rocks. Yes, I still do that!

Yes, it’s fun. Life should be fun. Everyone should be out and enjoying the great outdoors. Including you! Want proof? Here are 10 reasons why you need to get outside:

1. It’s free! That’s right, getting outside and enjoying nature will cost you absolutely ZERO dollars. Nada. Nothing. It’s FREE!

2. It boosts your immunity! Nature walks can have a profound and positive effect on your immune system.

3. It will help you get fit – If you’re going to be out in nature, that will entail a walk and walking is great exercise for your body and your mind!

4. Boost your creative muse – Studies have shown that when you get out in nature, your creative juices will naturally start to flow. Kids who spend more time outdoors have longer attention spans than their indoor-dwelling counterparts. So make sure your kids put down the electronics and get outside for some playtime in nature.

5. Gain perspective – There is something about being out in nature that grounds you and helps you to realize what is really important in life.

6. Feel happier – Being in nature will bring out a sense of peace and well-being that you can never get from sitting in front of a computer or television screen.

7. Increase your Vitamin D levels – Vitamin D is known to fight infections, including colds and the flu, as it regulates the expression of genes that influence your immune system to attack and destroy bacteria and viruses.

8. Heal your body – There is something inherently healing about being outside. Maybe it’s the natural light, or just the calming reality of being in a natural environment. Regardless, being outside can only benefit your health.

9. Heal your brain – Walking in nature will give your brain a boost. It will relieve stress and calm your mind.

10. Sleep better – I’m not sure why, but getting out in nature always helps me sleep better. Maybe it’s the additional exercise or the release of stress that helps. Regardless, I always sleep better after a nice walk outside.

I hope you will start getting outside more. Look around you and appreciate what a wonderful planet we live on.
