Natural Alternatives to Prescription Antibiotics

This winter, which thankfully seems to be over, my family had their share of the yucks, including diagnosed cases of strep and walking pneumonia.

As most of you know, I like to find natural alternatives to prescription medications and have found many holistic answers to that need. I thought I would do a rundown of the protocols I have used to help my family get better using nature’s antibiotics.

Nature’s Remedies

1. Apple Cider Vinegar – The kind with “the mother” in it (We use Braggs). Mix a tablespoon in a cup of warm water and gargle with it every 2 hours.

2. Vitamin C – Vitamin C can be useful combatting viruses, stress and promote overall health. Taking about 1,000 mg three times daily can be useful in combatting strep.

3. Cayenne Pepper – Cayenne is one of nature’s most revered remedies in battling viruses and strep. Try taking a cotton swap, swiping it in the powdered pepper and swabbing it on the back of your throat (or just use the recipe below).

4. Garlic – Raw garlic is a natural antibiotic. Dr. Andrew Weil discusses the healing properties of garlic here.

5. Raw honey – There is an impressive amount of healing power in that golden liquid! You can read about the studies scientists have found regarding the healing properties of raw honey on this government website.

When my family came down with both strep and walking pneumonia I started searching for something I could use to help them. Here is a recipe we used, alternating on the hour with gargling the ACV.

Natural Garlic Antibiotic

(We took it every 2 hours.)

1 Tablespoon Minced Garlic
1 Tablespoon Raw Honey
1/2 Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper

Mix together and take 1 Tablespoon every 2 hours. This is important –> Keep the mixture in your mouth for one minute and CHEW the garlic. It’s the chewing that releases the antibiotic properties in garlic. I know this mixture sounds a bit “iffy” taste-wise; however, I found that it tastes a lot like an Asian-inspired spicy sauce. I did not mind the taste at all and neither did my husband.

I hope these natural antibiotic tips help you the next time you need them. They certainly helped my family get back on the road to recovery and wellness!

Have a blessed day!
