How To Let Go – 7 Keys to Release Negativity

One of the key ingredients to living a truly happy and abundant life is to let go of past hurts and disappointments.

But how?

The first step to letting go, is acknowledging the hurt, guilt, sadness, anger or disappointment you are harboring. As Mark Twain said, “Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.”

The same can be said for any negative emotion. By holding on and dwelling on the negative, you are causing much more harm to yourself, both mentally and physically than you are to the person or situation those negative emotions are directed toward.

Here are 7 keys to help you let go of the negative emotion and start living your life in gratitude and abunance.

1. Show gratitude – Instead of dwelling on the negative situation or emotion, start counting your many blessings. Your health, your family, your friends, your job, your home and anything else you can come up with. When we start acknowledging all of the good in our lives, it takes away the sting of the bad.

2. Channel your negative emotions into positive action – For instance, if you are not happy in your current job, you can take steps to learn a new skill set. Hone your resume and start looking for a job opportunity you will love. If you are not happy with your weight, start today by taking a walk and making a few healthier adjustments to your menu.

3. Visualization – Visualize your perfect day. Fill it with everything wonderful you would experience and really allow yourself to feel the joy from living that day. You can read more about visualization here.

4. Focus your energy on something you can control – I think we all know that we cannot control other people. However, we CAN control how we react to other people. Do not dwell on something or someone you have no control over.

5. Take responsibility – Take personal responsibility for your emotions. If you are having negative feelings and thoughts, they are 100% under your control.

6. Exercise – Physical movement is a great stress reliever. I had a neighbor once who was stressing over her husband quitting his job to start a new company. I would watch her through my window walk for sometimes 2 hours around our neighborhood to relieve the stress. The added benefit? She looked great (and her husband’s new business ended up being so successful they moved into their million dollar dream home a few years later!).

7. Learn the lesson – We can all learn something, even from negative situations. What can this situation teach you?
