Couch to 5K – Week Two

I am in the second week of the Couch to 5K program my husband and I started a little over a week ago. So far, so good.

Saturday, my husband was leaving for a business trip, so we took our run earlier than usual. I think I liked that better. Anyway, with the second week, you run for 90 seconds and walk for 2 minutes. I was doing great until the last run. I looked ahead of me and realized the last 90 seconds would be entirely uphill. And when I say uphill, I’m not talking about a slight incline. I’m talking UP HILL!

Oh no.

As we were walking, I told my husband I thought we’d have to slow the pace down since it was uphill and just take it easy. He agreed, and you know what? It wasn’t all that bad!

Since he was gone yesterday, I thought I would have to do the run alone; however, I had two little gentlemen who said they’d run it with me. They’re 8 and 10 and I looked at them and said, “Can you keep up with me?” To which the 8 year old replied, “The real question is can you keep up with me?”

I’d been had!

They grabbed their water bottles and off we went and you know what? They were doing a better pace than I was! It was a fun run and good quality time with my boys. I tried my best to get my teenage daughter to go with us, but she’s a teenager, so …

This morning when I got up it was raining and my first thought was, “I guess I won’t be running today.” Then I realized I wasn’t made of sugar, won’t melt in the rain and decided I would do my run anyway. After dropping the kids off at school, I hooked up my ipod, grabbed the stopwatch and headed out the door.

Aside from a little knee cramp midway through the run, it was fine and the music helped tremendously.

As for my Vibram Five Finger shoes, they’re still doing great! I am loving the feel of them and almost feel like I’m running barefooted. I’ve had zero pain other than the initial soreness when we first started the program. My feet feel fine.

But again, I’m a barefoot person and loathe wearing shoes. Some people, like my husband, are probably better off sticking with regular running shoes.

I’ll give another update on my progress next Monday. Have a great week!
