10 Simple Strategies to Get Fit During the Day

Many people have the same excuse as to why they are not exercising.

One of the top excuses is, “I don’t have the time.” It’s a worn-out reason for not treating your body with the kindness it deserves.

We were not meant to sit around all day watching television or sitting staring at a computer screen. Our bodies are made to move and be strong!

So, if you are one of those super-busy people, how are you going to squeeze in the recommended 30 minutes a day of exercise?

Here are 10 Simple Ways to Get Fit During the Day:

1. Do Housework – I know it’s not glamorous and frankly, I loathe it. However, all of that squatting, bending, scrubbing lifting and sweeping works muscles and burns calories. You not only get a clean house, you get off your behind and work your muscles.

2. Garden – Gardening is a common theme among those who live in the Blue Zones of the world. Again, the squatting, bending, hoeing, pulling, carrying of water, etc. is a great workout and the benefit is not only physical exercise, you get beautiful flowers and healthy fruits and vegetables from your efforts!

3. Get a dog and walk it every morning and evening – Just taking a dog for a short 15 minute walk twice a day gets in the 30 minutes you need. Plus, the companionship a dog offers is great for your health, so you’re getting 2 benefits for the “price” of one.

4. Unless you’re someone who is physically handicapped, stop being a parking lot vulture and squeeze in some extra steps from your car to the stores.

5. If you are a couch potato (which I really hope you are not), stand up and do some kind of exercise during commercial breaks. Of course, with streaming videos and dvrs, most people are just fast-forwarding through the commercials if they are including in the show at all.

6. During working hours, take a short walk around your office building for your breaks and during lunch. In fact, you can start a walking group and instead of going out and eating a calorie-laden lunch with your co-workers, why not start a healthy-habit of walking in the middle of the day?

7. Schedule a time during your day to work out and treat it like any other non-negotiable appointment. Some people like to get their workout in first thing in the morning so they know it’s taken care of before the rest of their day starts.

8. Buy a stand-up desk and use it instead of the traditional sitting desk. If you have room for both, alternate using them for different tasks.

9. Dance – I love dancing and if you have kids, you probably have an Xbox or Wii systems around. You know what you can get for those gaming systems? Dance programs like Just Dance and Zumba. If you’re the self-conscious type, you can just wait until no one is around, pop those discs into the system and have yourself a dance party of one.

10. Make plans to meet a friend at the park for a walk. You can catch up on each other’s lives and get fit at the same time!

I hope these suggestions help you to get started on a healthier lifestyle. If you have any other suggestions, I’d love to hear them!
