What’s Holding You Back?

What”s holding you back from living the life of your dreams?

For most people, that answer is fear. You may not label or even recognize it as fear, but that is exactly what it is.

We may label our fear as excuses and think that is the reason we cannot get to where we want to go. Do any of these sound familiar?

  • I don’t have the time.
  • I’m too busy.
  • I don’t have the money.
  • I have too much on my plate.
  • I don’t know how.

All of these are blockades we are using to prevent us from living the life we want to live.

For instance, whenever a high profile celebrity such as Oprah gets in shape and loses weight, I usually hear the comment, “Of course she could lose weight and get in shape! She’s got all that money for private chefs and a personal trainer!”

Well, I’m hear to tell you, she may have a personal chef and a personal trainer, but it is her choice whether or not to get that chef to prepare healthy meals or decadent desserts. Just as it is our choice whether or not we want to prepare healthy meals for ourselves and our families, or indulge in a creamy, fat-laden casserole or sugary treat.

Let’s take the personal trainer argument. Yes, someone like Oprah has the money to have a private gym and a personal trainer to tell her what to do. But you know what? It’s not the personal trainer who is doing the work and reaping the rewards. It’s Oprah’s backside that is running around her neighborhood, or on the treadmill or lifting that weight.

In short, we have all the resources to be healthy and fit at our fingertips, but we choose a different path. That could be laziness, fear of what may happen if we get that body we always wanted or some other reason. Believe it or not, there are people who consciously or subconsciously like being overweight and out of shape, because they are afraid of the attention they may bring upon themselves if their bodies change for the better.

The same can be true for anything else we want, but are not actively pursuing. I am guilty of this myself.

For a while, I have wanted to host my own radio show where I can talk to people about positive thinking, their problems and common sense solutions to getting out of their rut and living a more abundant life. But I haven’t done it yet.

I have also made plans to have a YouTube channel where I encourage and uplift people, but I haven’t done that either.

When I ask myself what is holding me back, it’s always an excuse. I don’t know what I’m doing. Why would anyone listen to me. I’ve not lost the amount of weight I wanted to, maybe I’ll do the videos when I’ve lost another 30 pounds.

Again, though, it all boils down to fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of what other people may think. Fear of success.

It is time we tell our fears to take a hike and pursue the dreams God has placed in our hearts. We must step out in faith and believe that He will help us get through whatever rough patches lay ahead.

God is bigger than your fear!

Have faith. Dream big. Take action. And watch as miraculous things unfold.

What is holding you back from your dreams?
