How To Have Unlimited Optimism

th-4

“I believe I am always divinely guided.
I believe I will always take the right turn of the road.
I believe God will always make a way where there is no way.”

This quote was taken from one of the chapters of “Power of Positive Thinking” by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. It is a quote which pretty much sums up my life philosophy.

I have often stated that I do not know how people who do not have faith in God get through the tough times life throws at them. Without my faith, I would be lost in life’s tumultuous sea.

I do believe our lives are divinely guided and have many, many examples how God has stepped in and prevented me from making mistakes. One such example was when my husband and I were in our first year of marriage and I was very pregnant with our first child, who was expected on our wedding anniversary!

Nothing against Memphis, but I did not enjoy living there and prior to getting married, both my husband and I tried finding jobs in the Nashville, TN area. I prayed and prayed that God would open a door for us to live there. Both of us looked forward to starting our new life together in Middle Tennessee. However, no matter what we tried, no matter how many jobs we applied to, neither of us could find a way to get there. So, I resolved that it was God’s will that we live in Memphis and made the best of it.

As my due date approached, my husband and I were looking for a house to buy. I really wanted to be in our own home before our daughter arrived. We found a charming tudor-style cottage in a great school district that we fell in love with. We put down an offer along with an earnest money check and left to visit my parents in Virginia. We were both very excited.

Not long after we arrived, my husband checked his voicemail and guess what? We lost the house to a higher bidder. I was crushed. I cried. I was bitterly disappointed. My husband comforted me and said we would find something better.

A week later, we were back in Memphis and my husband received another phone call. This one was from a judge in Nashville who he had contacted about a year ago. The judge said, “If you are still interested in moving to the Nashville area, I have a friend who is willing to give you a great deal on office space in downtown Nashville and I will give you all of the appointed cases you can handle.” After that, many more obstacles to our moving suddenly vanished. Not only did God open the door, He threw open the windows and took the roof off!

One month after our daughter was born, we moved to Franklin, TN and spent 15 wonderful years there.

If we had been able to buy that house in Memphis, we never would have moved to Franklin.

Just remember, all things are in God’s time, not our time. He will make the right things happen when they are supposed to.

I always remember when I am praying that God always answers prayers in one of three ways:

1. Yes!
2. Not Yet!
3. I have something better in mind!

Trust in Him and know that He is always guiding your footsteps and looking out for your best interest. As long as you remember this, no matter what comes along in life, you can find the optimism that a better future awaits you.
