Have you ever heard of bulletproof coffee?

The other day I was reading a post by one of my oily friends on Facebook and they said they were enjoying a cup of this magical brew. I thought it was a brand of really strong coffee.

As it turns out, it’s not! It’s coffee with grassfed butter mixed in.

You’re probably wondering why anyone would put butter in their coffee and what on earth it tastes like. I’m going to tell you (and by the way, it tastes DIVINE)!

It’s a new thing and a lot of people are doing it, because of the health benefits which are great:

1. Use ONLY Grass Fed Butter – If you’re a health enthusiast, then you know that only grass-fed butter has the right fats that regulate cholesterol. So, instead of adding to your bad cholesterol, it’s keeping it down. Grass-fed butter also has the best ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids. This is what reduces body fat. It’s also a good source of vitamin K, which according studies may reduce the risk of heart disease.

2. You get healthy fats – Years ago, who would have thought we’d be talking about healthy fats vs. non-healthy fats? Basically, if it’s man-made or GMO contaminated, don’t eat it. Healthy fats include virgin, organic coconut oil, olive oil, avocados and butter! Yes grass fed butter is good for you, so throw away that nasty man-made margarine that probably contains GMOs. Grass Fed Butter provides healthy fats for your brain and body to create cell membranes and hormones. (We use Kerry Butter in our home.) The short-chain fatty acid Butyrate, once thought to be bad for you, has been linked to preventing neurodegenerative diseases, increased energy expenditure, and is also anti-inflammatory, further preventing heart disease.

3. An All-Day Fat Burner – By drinking this brew each morning, you will put your body in the routine to burn fat all day, helping you trim down overall. CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is found in grass-fed butter and has been shown to reduce body fat mass especially in overweight individuals.

4. Increased Energy – Put down that donut and pick up that mug! Not only will the caffeine in the coffee give you a pick-me-up, but by drinking this “Bulletproof” coffee, you will increase cognitive function that you can literally feel when it kicks in. This boost will last for about six hours and you won’t have the crash you get with sugar. Mix in another healthy fat, like coconut oil and this amped up energy drink will help produce ketones, which are created when your body creates energy from fat rather than carbohydrates.

5. It makes a great alternative to eating Breakfast – Yes, you heard that right! About two tablespoons of butter in your coffee is all you need to replace a breakfast meal altogether. This is a great thing for people on the go or those who don’t really like breakfast. This concoction provides your body with essential fats and calories.

This is where I’ll fess up to what I put in my bulletproof coffee. I use spring water and organic coffee beans I grind myself. Then I pour the hot, hot, hot coffee in my blender with 2 Tablespoons of Kerry Butter, 1 Tablespoon of Coconut Oil and 2 Tablespoons of Organic Maple Syrup. Blend, then pour that frothy magic into a big mug and enjoy.
