Stay Weird. Stay Different.

stay weird

At the Oscars on Sunday night, I witnessed one of the BEST speeches I’ve ever seen. It was given by Oscar winning screenwriter, Graham Moore and his speech came down to the advice, “Stay weird. Stay different.” It was brilliant!

Here is a transcript:

“Alan Turing never got to stand on a stage like this and look out at all of these disconcertingly attractive faces. I do! And that’s the most unfair thing I’ve ever heard. So in this brief time here, what I wanted to do was say this: When I was 16 years old, I tried to kill myself. Because I felt weird and I felt different and I felt like I did not belong. And now I’m standing here. And so I would like for this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she’s weird or she’s different or she doesn’t fit in anywhere. Yes, you do! I promise, you do! Stay weird. Stay different, and then when it’s your turn and you are standing on this stage, please pass the same message along.”

Here’s the video:

Graham went on to clarify that he is not gay, but feels as though we don’t talk about and address depression enough. I agree.

For those of you out there who may be struggling because you feel weird, or different or “nerdy,” … Embrace it. Love the uniqueness that is YOU.

Who wants to be a clone of everyone else? I certainly never did. I still don’t. I like living life on my terms.

Be who you are and love yourself. You are awesome!

And with that, I will leave you with two more videos for today:
