In the book, “The Power of Positive Thinking”, Dr. Norman Vincent Peale speaks about the explosive power of prayer, visualization and seeing positive results.

I have seen this formula work for others as well as for myself.

I will give you one instance which happened to me personally about 12 years ago. My husband, daughter and I had recently moved to a new town and were living in an apartment. The cost of living for the area we relocated was expensive; however, we wanted to be in a good, safe area with highly rated schools.

I desperately wanted to be able to move to a house. The prices were prohibitive, but I continually prayed and asked God to help us find a home. We started looking around and found a wonderful neighborhood with affordable housing that was very close to our church. In fact, several of our fellow parishioners lived in that very neighborhood. The houses were older, had huge yards of at least 1.5 acres was close to great schools and there were lots of kids.

The problem? The neighborhood was so great that every time a house came on the market, it was sold within a week. One weekend my husband and I drove through, saw a house for sale, called to find out how much they were asking and it was already sold. It had only been on the market 3 days!

We continued to drive through the neighborhood every weekend, sometimes several times in a single day. We loved the neighborhood and every time we would drive through, I would visualize that we were turning into the subdivision on our way home.

One Sunday, we were very late for church. As we were rushing to get in, I noticed one of our friends was sitting outside with her teenage daughter. I knew she lived in the subdivision where we wanted to move, so I walked over, said hello and told her how much we loved her neighborhood and if she ever even heard a whisper of someone planning to put their home on the market would she please let us know.

She looked at me and said, “That’s so strange. The reason we’re out here is that my daughter is upset because her best friend just told her they were moving to North Carolina and would be putting their home up for sale in the next week. They live in our neighborhood!”

It turns out that the girl’s father had decided on a career change and was entering seminary in North Carolina.
I asked her for the address and after church, we drove by and took a look. I cannot begin to tell you the number of times we passed by this house during our drive-throughs of the neighborhood. It was one of my favorites.

I called her that afternoon and asked for their phone number. We went by that evening and loved it even more. Because neither of us were using a realtor, the price was lower than what it would have been. We told them we wanted the house, we were approved for the loan and have been living there ever since.

This is just one instance where the power of prayer, visualize and actualization has occurred in my life. There are many others. I now have a different vision for my life and I am utilizing this technique every day.

Here are some tips from the book for the formula:

1. Think about what you want. Test it. Is it really something you should want for yourself? Pray! Ask God to help you achieve it, believe that He will help you and be thankful.

God always knows what you need and it has been my experience that He usually gives us something much better than what we’ve asked for.

And remember the saying, “Be careful what you ask for, you may get it!”

Be sure you really want it first!

2. Visualize yourself as already having what you want.

Picture yourself with that house, job, car, whatever it is that you are asking for. It’s not just enough to think about it, you should be almost obsessive about it and believe you have already received it. Be thankful.

3. Actualize! Things will move into place to get you what you want.

Sometimes it may not be as quickly as we want them. A lot of people give up because they want it immediately and when it doesn’t happen, they quit. In this case, patience really is a virtue.

Here is a great video interview with Oprah Winfrey where she speaks about the “Law of Attraction” and her part in “The Color Purple”. Notice how she says it was all she could think about, pray about and desire. She released it into God’s hands and her desire was realized. As she stated, visualization is only one law working in God’s universe. But it is a powerful law.

Think about what you want, pray about it, visualize it and expect it to happen!
