How to Create Your Own Life Plan

He who fails to plan, plans to fail – Proverb

Wouldn’t it be great if you could create a life plan and in fact, design your own life? If everything you want could really happen, what would you?

Did you know that you have a much higher chance of that actually coming about if you know what you want and make a plan to achieve it? Of course, there are no guarantees in life, but the odds are in your favor when you have a plan.

It’s just like the old story of someone wanting to get from New York to Los Angeles, but they have no map, no idea which road to take or even what direction they’re even supposed to go. Do you think they have any chance of getting to L.A. when they have no route to follow? Then how can you get to where you want to go in life with no plan?

Just as a building takes shape based on the drawings of an architect, your life can take shape based on a plan for your future. We may not be able to design ever miniscule aspect of our future, but we can set ourselves upon a path toward reaching our personal and professional goals.

Let me give you a few examples. We cannot change our past. We cannot change our parents, our siblings, our past education or childhood. Anything in the past is done. It’s finished. It’s over. You will need to design your future from this point forward.

But keep in mind, even the best laid plans can still go wrong. Life can go off course and I know from experience, obstacles will appear. However, the key is to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, get back on track and go through, over, around any obstacles that present themselves.

If you want to lead a successful life, you need to start planning for success today. Plans are guidelines, they’re not set in stone. Sometimes a life plan will need to be modified to reflect changes in your own personality and desires. But anyone who is successful will tell you, it all starts with a plan.

Here are the tools you can use to design your own life plan. I hope it helps you live the life of your dreams.

1. Make a Blueprint

The blueprint for your life can be the roadmap of your life. There may be some roadblocks, some detours or a few other disruptions, but as long as you know where you are going, you can make strategic decisions to help you get to your final destination. This blueprint should encompass your personal life, your health, your finances and your profession. Anything that is important to you should be included in this plan.

2. Stay Focused

Keep in mind that the power of your thoughts will help you on your road to success. Keep a positive mindset, no matter what obstacles may present themselves. Stay committed to your plan and don’t see setbacks as failures, but just a roadbump on your travels. Believe in yourself and your ability to achieve your goals. Believe in your vision.

3. Take Action

While it’s great to have a plan, if you never take steps toward reaching your goals, you will get nowhere. Think of someone who plans a trip and has ever rest stop and road calculated along the way. If that person never gets in the car, fills it up and starts driving, they will still get nowhere. You may need to go back to school, or move to a new city or step outside of your comfort zone. Whatever it is that you need to do, then do it. Don’t sit around and think about doing it or imagine doing it. You must take action.

4. Make adjustments

As you start on your path of your life plan, you will need to stop periodically and see if there are adjustments or changes that need to be made. Perhaps you thought you’d be living in a certain area for the rest of your life, but now realize you should be living somewhere completely different. Remember to celebrate any successes you have along your path. Reward yourself and take note of just how far you have come from where you began.

5. Seek a Supportive Environment

I have seen this described as a Master Mind group. Basically, you should surround yourself with people who support your vision, your path and you. Keep any negative people away if possible. They will bring you down. Ask yourself, who do I know who can help me read my goals? Who do I know who may know someone who could help me.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help, advice and guidance!

Review your plan on a regular basis, take action, make adjustments when necessary, reward yourself for progress and never give up, even when the road seems difficult.

If you keep these steps in mind and utilize them, you will be well on your way to not only creating a life plan, but living the life of your dreams.
