Health Benefits of Eating a Raw Diet

As I stated yesterday, I’ve started eating a raw vegan diet. I’m planning on sticking with this for 3 weeks and see how it makes me feel.

I won’t lie. Yesterday was tough. I have been eating blue cheese on my salads every day and it was not easy to give that up. There was also the mild hunger pains I had to endure. Fortunately, I either ate or had a smoothie every 3 hours, so the mild hunger never turned into ravenous hunger.

I thought this would be a great time of year to try out a raw diet, since produce is so plentiful. Taken separately, yesterday I had a banana, spinach, kale, a peach, an orange, strawberries, raw almonds, red onion, red bell pepper, jalapeno pepper, cucumber, tomatoes, almond milk, garlic, lime and a tablespoon of cold-pressed olive oil.

My meals yesterday:

Breakfast – Banana and Almond Milk
Mid-Morning Smoothie – Orange/Spinach/Coconut Water Smoothie (Delicious)
Lunch – Gazpacho
Mid-Afternoon Smoothie – Peach/Kale/Coconut Water Smoothie (this did not taste great)
Dinner – Strawberry Spinach Salad with slivered Almonds

The website, Integrative Nutrition, gives some of the health benefits of eating a raw diet:

High in fiber—Fiber rich foods like vegetables, fruits, seeds, and beans are associated with a number of health benefits including: weight control, cardiovascular health, disease fighting phytochemicals, and digestive health among many more.

Weight loss—Raw foods are low in calories, so incorporating more raw foods in your diet can help aid weight loss and help detoxify our bodies. However, our caloric needs cannot be met through fruits and vegetables alone. To make sure you’re maintaining a healthy weight on a raw foods diet, it’s important to consume a large amount of nuts, seeds, and avocado.

Vitamins and minerals—Certain vitamins in foods such as vitamin C and folate are destroyed by heat. Research shows that cooking certain foods like broccoli destroys its cancer-fighting properties.

Cooling and hydrating—Raw foods contain a high water content which helps to cool down your body and keep you hydrated. Snack on fresh fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumbers, pears, and leafy greens to stay hydrated and energized during the hot summer months.

Increased energy—Since they are closer to their live natural states, raw foods can provide us with a higher quality of energy to help us feel more alive and ready to take on the day.

Again, as I’ve gotten older and seen more than a few of my contemporaries drop dead from a heart attack at a reasonably young age, I have become much more aware of what I am putting in my body. My journey toward a healthier lifestyle is not an overnight thing. It’s not a “fad.” I am learning and progressing.

Like anything, you fall, you get up, brush yourself off and try and do better the next time. It’s a process.

Don’t beat yourself up when you cave to a slice of pizza or a hamburger. And don’t judge others when they indulge their cravings. Russell Simmons spoke about eating a slice of cheese pizza with a friend and one of his followers saw him and told him how disappointed and disillusioned he was to see him doing this.

You and everyone else are human. Life is to be enjoyed, not monitored.

Eat healthier foods more than you eat unhealthy foods.

Here endeth the lesson …
