He Had A Dream …

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream that one day everyone would be considered equal. That people would be judged by the content of the character and not the color of their skin. Many of us cannot imagine the kind of world Dr. King grew up in as I believe in many ways, his dream has been realized.

My late mother worked at a prominent Virginia hospital throughout her life and one day I came with my father to pick her up from work. While my father was putting her wheelchair in the car (my mother had polio as a child), we started talking about Dr. King. She pointed to a building about three blocks over and said, “When I started working here, that was the black hospital.”

I remember looking at her and said, “Black hospital?”

She went on to tell me that back then, white people and black people were not even allowed to be in the same hospital together and they kept them completely separated in different hospitals. She then shook her head and said, “That was wrong.”

It was wrong, and thankfully, because of people like Dr. King, we are better people.

In honor of Dr. King’s birthday, I give you his famous speech.

Happy Birthday Dr. King!
