Couch to 5K – I’m doing it! And I’m wearing those Vibram Five Finger Shoes too!
I don’t know how many people know the Couch to 5K plan to get started running, but it’s an ease-into-it approach for beginners.
I’ve tried to run before, but never liked it. My shins would hurt, it wasn’t fun and after a couple of days, I’d quit. I decided I was a dancer and a walker, not a runner.
Well, after seeing relatively young people I’m acquainted with die recently, I decided to give running another shot. I’ve even gotten my husband to do it with me.
We both wanted to do it right, so Saturday we ventured over to REI and picked out our running shoes. Anyone who knows me, knows I’m a barefoot afficionado and loathe wearing shoes. In fact, my high school Latin teacher nicknamed me “The Barefoot Contessa” because the first thing I did when I got to class was kick off my shoes. I remembered a few months back I saw a photo of Scarlett Johannson wearing these funky toe finger shoes while jogging and I thought, “Hmmm, maybe I’d like those since I could run almost barefooted, but still have my feet protected.”
So, when I got to REI on Saturday, I tried on a pair of Vibram Five Finger Shoes. I had to try on four pair before I got the right fit. The first were too tight and the third, one shoe fit, but the other felt like a had a pebble between my toes. The salesperson brought out another pair and they were just right! These are the shoes I ended up buying only mine are a hot pink color just like in the photo above.
My husband was going to try a pair as well, only he’s not a barefoot person. He wears shoes all the time. Even in the house. My shoes are by the door. They only get put on when I’m leaving the house and they are taken off when I get back in. The salesperson who was helping my husband told him if he wore the Vibram shoes, his feet would be in pain for about a week. He ended up buying another pair of traditional running shoes.
Saturday afternoon, I grab my iPhone which has a nifty stopwatch app and we did the Couch to 5K. Since we live in a hilly area, the final 60 second running was brutal for me, since it was uphill. But I was okay. I was not even that sore on Sunday morning and my feet felt great. The Vibram shoes made it feel like I was running barefoot, only I didn’t have to worry about stepping on rocks as they were protected. No sore feet for me, but my ankles felt like they had a workout.
Yesterday, we set out again and this time, two of my children came with us. I don’t know if I was just having a good day or what, but the run was easier for me yesterday. Still no foot pain, but now my hips, stomache, thighs and ankles are all sore. However, it’s that “good” kind of sore. The kind that tells you you’ve been working out an area that hasn’t seen much action for a while.
I’m getting ready to go out again this morning for the third straight day. My husband and I are doing this thing together and I believe this time, I may actually like running. For those of you who are like me and prefer to be barefooted, I highly recommend the Vibram Five Finger shoes. If you don’t like running barefoot, you probably want to stick with your basic running shoes.
I’ll update again on the Couch to 5K program one week at a time.
