Top 10 Benefits and Uses of Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil is one of those things I never knew about and now that I have found it, I wonder how I ever lived without it!

I think I first read something about it on a Facebook post, so earlier this summer when I found a huge jar of it on sale, I bought it. I am so glad I did. I have used this magical oil for many, many things! Some of my favorites uses:

1. As a make-up remover – I slather this all over my face, rub it in for a few seconds then wipe it off with a warm washcloth.

2. As a moisturizer – I will be honest with you. I have used every kind of moisturizer for my face from Lancome to Clinique to Oil of Olay and nothing has made my skin look as good as Coconut Oil. As an added bonus, I found out Young Living’s Frankincense was good for skin (especially wrinkles), so I started putting a few drops into the coconut oil before moisturizing. My skin has never looked this good and I know it is because of the mixture of coconut and Frankincense oils.

3. As a deep conditioning hair treatment – When my hair needs a little pick-me-up and is looking dried out, I grab a scoop or two of this oil and massage it into my hair. I then wrap up my hair and let it sit for a couple of hours before washing it out.

4. As a homeopathic remedy for pink-eye – I read in several places that you could use coconut oil to heal pink-eye. Well, I was more than a little skeptical; however, several weeks ago, my youngest son came down with pink eye and I gave this a try. I told him to rub a good amount onto his eye several times during the day. He did and by the next morning, the pink-eye was gone! I’m a believer!

5. As a dietary supplementSupermodel Miranda Kerr caused a stir a couple of years ago when she told an interviewer that she didn’t “go a day without coconut oil” and claimed it was her beauty secret. She said she put it on everything from salads to her tea. The oil contains fatty acids which are said to leave skin and hair smooth and shiny.

6. Improves cholesterol – Coconut oil has a saturated fat called lauric acid, a type of MCT. It has been shown that lauric acid increases the good HDL cholesterol in the blood to help improve cholesterol ratio levels. Coconut oil lowers cholesterol by promoting its conversion to pregnenolone, a molecule that is a precursor to many of the hormones our bodies need.

7. Weight Loss – Consuming 2 tablespoons of coconut oils a day has been shown to help people lose weight. A 2009 study found that women who consumed about 2 tablespoons of coconut oil daily for 12 weeks not only did not gain more weight, but actually had lowered amounts of abdominal fat.

8. Anti-Aging – The oils found in the coconut have a positive antioxidant action in the body. This means they help our body stop the damage to other healthy fats and tissues in our body. Oxidation is considered a major contributor to cardiovascular problems and skin aging. Coconut oil can actually help our bodies reduce the need for antioxidant intake.

9. Cold sore remedy – Coconut oil can be used to speed up the healing process!

10. Tooth paste – Mix some coconut oil, baking soda and Young Living Peppermint essential oil and you’ve got yourself a great toothpaste. You can also use it by itself or use it for oil pulling.

These are just some of the amazing things you can use this oil for! There are many, many others and I encourage you to go out and try them for yourself.

* Make sure you are buying Virgin Organic Coconut Oil!
