12 Things Happy People Do Differently

I have often wondered if having a positive mental attitude was genetically programmed into some people’s DNA, or if it was a learned behavior.

For instance, my mother went through terrible things during her lifetime, including being confined to a wheelchair since she was eight years old. However, she was always smiling, always looked for the good in a situation and had many, many friends who loved her. I think one of the reasons is she was always smiling and happy.

Fortunately, I seem to be the same way in that I look for the positive in situations. What I do not know is: Did I inherit this ability, or did I adopt it because my mother modeled the behavior for me?

Perhaps one day I will find the answer. Until then, here is a list of the 12 Things Happy People Do Differently. I believe this list was compiled by Stephen Covey of the “7 Habits” book.

1. Express Gratitude
2. Cultivate Optimism
3. Avoid Overthinking and Social Comparism
4. Practice Acts of Kindness
5. Nurture Social Relationships
6. Develop Strategies for Coping
7. Learn to Forgive
8. Increase Flow Experiences
9. Savor Life’s Joys
10. Commit to Your Goals
11. Practice Spirituality
12. Take Care of Your Body

Even if some people are genetically pre-disposed to being positive and happy, by following these 12 tips, perhaps everyone can live a happier, fuller and more positive life!
