10 Reasons Why The Beach Makes Us Happy

10 Reasons

Winter 2015 seems as though it’s been going on forever. Ice, sleet, freezing rain and snow have pelted the country over and over.

As I sat here last week, watching the sleet bounce off our back patio, I found myself seeking out photos of tropical landscapes. Clear water and sandy beaches beckoned to me from my computer screen and I felt a longing to feel the scratchy granules between my toes and the waves wash over my body.

My bliss at just thinking on these things was almost immediate.

I am looking forward to the summer and my family’s getaway to the turquoise waters of Pensacola. I am happy just in the planning and the anticipation of going to our favorite places, swimming in the salty Gulf and eating one of my favorite meals, Grits a Ya-Ya at the Fish House.

It made me start to wonder, “What is it about the beach? Why does the beach make us happy?”

10 Reasons Why The Beach Makes Us Happy

1. You Are Not At Work

Most people only set out for the beach when they’re on vacation. This means they are not at work and are able to relax and enjoy life without the pressures of their job. This is yet another reason why I joined Young Living. I don’t want a job that I feel like I need to get away from!

2. You’ve got that lovin’ feeling!

Whether you’re with your family, spouse, best friend, boyfriend/girlfriend or your pals, odds are you are making that trip to the beach with someone you’re quite fond of and being around people you like and who like you makes you feel good!

3. You look better (and thinner!)

Let’s face it, despite all the warnings about skin cancer, most of us love to get a little extra sun in the summertime. We like that glow that comes from being outdoors and we believe, rightly or wrongly, that the extra color makes us look healthier. Not only that, having a tan makes you look thinner and who doesn’t love that? Besides that, the salt and sand are great exfoliators, which means you’re getting rid of that nasty dead skin and leaving behind younger, fresher skin cells!

4. Your hair looks great!

I know … I know! You’re out on the beach and that wind coming off the water is whipping your hair back and forth enough to make Willow Smith jealous. However, did you know that it’s a proven fact that your hair grows thicker and faster when exposed to sunlight? It’s true! As an added bonus, you get that fresh, tousled “beach” look that celebrities pay hundreds of dollars for … for FREE! And who doesn’t love FREE?

5. No dieting!

Who goes to the beach and watches calories? I don’t! I give in to every seafood craving that comes along, like the aforementioned Grits a Ya-Ya. I think it’s also a known fact that anything you eat at the beach, has no calories, right?

6. Read A Good Book Lately?

I’m a reader and a writer, so that answer is always, “Yes!” However, many people save up their reading time for their beach vacations and enjoy those tomes in sandy paper bliss! Whether it’s the latest romance novel, suspenseful thriller or science fiction adventure, reading can help reduce stress by 68%. So, I highly recommend you pick up a book and start reading instead of just waiting for your vacation at the beach.

7. Floating Your Life Away

Who doesn’t like floating around on a sea of salt? It’s relaxing and fun! I have a very vivid memory of my grandfather one summer. Our entire family went to Daytona Beach, Florida for a week. My grandfather was a great swimmer and at one point, he just stretched out on the very calm water on his back and fell asleep! I kid you not! He got so relaxed just floating around on his back, the current started to take him so far out, a lifeguard had to go wake him up and get him to swim back in. Did you know the magnesium on sea water has a calming and relaxing effect on the body? Just standing or floating in it, can relieve anxiety and stress!

8. The Sound of Crashing Waves

One of my favorite sounds in the world is the sound of waves crashing on the beach. Growing up in Virginia, my family would spend our vacations at Nags Head, North Carolina almost every summer. The thing I loved was to leave the windows open at night so I could see and hear the waves as they crashed. I would get the best night’s sleep while at the beach. Scientific research has shown that the sound of the waves actually changes your brain waves, contributing to a more relaxed feeling.

9. You Want to Be D-Listed!

If you’re a celebrity, being D-Listed is not a good thing. Everyone wants to be A-list! However, being D-Listed at the beach means your body is soaking up all of that good sunshine and manufacturing a good bit of Vitamin D. This boosts your production of serotonin which is the chemical that works to keep you feeling alert, up-beat and happy.

10. You Are Less Likely To Die!

Despite the book and movie “Jaws” making us feel as though if we set foot in the big blue ocean we’d get our lives snuffed out by a great white shark, it’s just not true! Taking vacations for relaxations actually helps you live a longer life. A study of 12,000 men over nine years showed that those who didn’t take an annual holiday were 32% more likely to die of a heart attack. So take a break and choose life. Choose the beach.

So there you have it, 10 reasons why the beach makes us happy. Have you planned your beach vacation yet?
