10 Quick Tips About Success

10 tips

When I sent out yesterday’s newsletter I briefly touched on something I wanted to write about today and that is making your dreams a reality.

When I was in college, my boyfriend’s family loved the water, which means, they had boats. Lots of boats. Everything from a Boston Whaler to a canoe. One boat that was a favorite was the sailboat. It was just big enough for about 3 or 4 people, but small enough for a single person to sail.

I knew nothing about sailing. Zero. Nada. Zilch. However, I learned to the point I could sail a boat by myself if I absolutely had to.

This brings me to story about what happened when we were out sailing one afternoon. We took a picnic lunch out to a small island in the bay. We planned on spending the afternoon and then heading back. We had great weather and the wind was perfect for sailing.

We had a great lunch and were having a wonderful time on the beach when we noticed a bank of very ominous black clouds on the horizon. We immediately packed up our things, loaded them onto the boat and pushed out into the bay so we could head back to the house.

We got out into the bay just fine, but once there, the wind died. It was almost non-existent and there was no motor on that sailboat. Meanwhile, the dark clouds on the horizon were getting closer and we were barely moving anywhere.

My boyfriend was an experience sailor, so he knew how to tack the boat back and forth to get us closer to shore. It was a long, long time before we reached shore, but we did and his father was waiting for us at the dock because he had seen that approaching storm as well.

Why am I telling you this story? Because reaching your goals and dreams is just like the approaching storm and sailing that boat. We didn’t get out in the middle of the bay with no wind and say, “Oh well, there’s a bad storm approaching and we have no wind. I guess we’ll just give up and sit here.” Nor did we say, “We really want to get to the house, but there’s no wind and a storm approaching, I guess we’ll just sit here and see where the storm and currents take us.”

No! We adjusted the sails. We tacked back and forth. We did what needed to be done in order to get to our destination!

That is what you must do when it comes to your goals and your dreams. Regardless of the obstacles, the storms, the difficulties that you will face (and you will face them), you don’t change your destination, you just adjust what you are doing to get there.

As most of you know, I adore Richard Branson. Here are his 10 tips for success:

1. Follow your dreams and just do it.
2. Make a positive difference and just do some good.
3. Believe in your ideas and be the best.
4. Have fun and look after your team.
5. Don’t give up.
6. Make lots of lists and keep setting yourself new challenges.
7. Spend time with your family and learn to delegate.
8. Turn off the tv and and get out there and do things.
9. When people say bad things about you, prove them wrong.
10. Do what you love (and have a sofa in the kitchen)
